How CBD helps your Rottweiler

Your Rottweiler is a loyal, loving companion.

She might look big, tough, and be a little stubborn, but she shows unconditional love to anyone she warms up to.

The truth is, Rottweilers are pretty healthy and athletic dogs. But you’re aware that they’re prone to developing some problems.

So your pup might have an issue, and you’ve heard about CBD and CBD Oil.

Well, the good news is that CBD and CBD Oil is a natural remedy that can help your Rottie deal with many different ailments.

Bit About Your Rottie

The Rottweiler Breed, of large dogs, is a descendant of the Molussus, an ancient dog breed similar to the Mastiff.

Brought to modern-day Germany by the Romans, the Rottweiler is a hard worker traditionally used to herd cattle.

And while their size and appearance might make them intimidating to some, Rottweilers love to cuddle and make for loyal, friendly companions and excellent family dogs.

They are known to be hard-headed and independent but are generally calm dogs given adequate training and plenty of exercise.

If you own a Rottie, you’ll know just how much these dogs love their outdoor playtime, while never missing an opportunity to cuddle up on the couch or bed afterward.

Common Ailments of Rottweiler and Health Problems

Rottweilers are typically healthy big dogs given they meet their exercise needs, and they're fed a healthy, balanced diet.

However, like all other dog breeds, they can be prone to some health problems, such as dysplasias and bloat.

They are also prone to some cancers and are known for chewing and digging, especially when they’re bored.

Here's are more health issues your Rottweiler dog may have:

Aortic Stenosis:
  • This condition is caused by a partial obstruction of blood flow as it leaves the left ventricle of the heart. This forces the heart to work harder in order to pump an adequate amount of blood around the body.
  • Due to their size, Rottweilers are naturally more prone to dysplasia, especially of the hips and elbows. These dysplasias are caused by genetic malformations of the bones in the affected joints, causing bones to rub against each other. This can result in lameness and pain, and will usually lead to arthritis, which causes further degeneration of the joint.
  • All dogs can develop cancers and Rottweilers are no different. Research shows that cancer and cancer cells are one of the leading causes of death in this breed. The most common cancers affecting Rottweilers are lymphoma, osteosarcoma, as well as liver and spleen tumors.
Cruciate Ligament Rupture:
  • The cruciate ligaments run across the back of the kneecap, holding together the femur, tibia, and fibula. These ligaments can stretch, rupture, or snap completely, often causing lameness in the leg. Luckily, the ligaments can be fixed with surgery.
Eye Problems:
  • Eye problems are a common health problem for many dogs, and Rottweilers seem to experience them frequently. The most common eye diseases affecting these dogs include cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy (or PRA).
Osteochondritis Dessicans:
  • This condition affects all canines but is much more prevalent in big-boned breeds like the Rottweiler. The condition usually affects pups of about 4-6 months and occurs when the bones grow abnormally (typically stretching or simply growing too fast without aligning properly). This can result in broken bones and malformed joints.
Nausea and Vomiting:

They can be the result of a specific condition, or can also be caused by treatments or medications such as chemotherapy.

Both in humans and dogs, nausea and vomiting are serious symptoms, often leading to a decreased appetite, rapid weight loss, dehydration, fatigue, and more.

There are plenty of antiemetic medications on the market, and some of the most common given to a dog include acepromazine, chlorpromazine, aminopentamide, and more.

These drugs, while often effective in controlling nausea and vomiting, can cause a wide variety of side effects, including:

  • Hypotension
  • Strong sedation
  • Lowered seizure thresholds for animals with epilepsy
  • Excessive drooling
  • Lethargy
  • Lack of appetite
  • Diarrhea

 Health Benefits of CBD Oil

There is a strong body of evidence that shows that CBD is a successful antiemetic, controlling both nausea and vomiting while also stimulating appetite.

Interestingly, it seems to do so by stimulating 5-HT1A receptors, the same receptor which can help reduce anxiety.

By activating this receptor, CBD can significantly reduce feelings of nausea in your dog and also suppress the subsequent vomiting reflex.

Research also suggests that prolonged stimulation of the CB1 cannabinoid receptor in the brain can also help reduce nausea and vomiting.

In doing so, studies show that CBD products can have powerful antiemetic effects, and CBD Oil works.

In fact, some studies suggest CBD is a better antiemetic than some modern medications for your dog.

Best of all, CBD doesn’t seem to cause any of the side effects of traditional antiemetic medications. Remember, your dog may or may not gain the same benefits.

CBD Promotes Homeostasis

Homeostasis can best be described as the proper functioning of the body.

It occurs when our bodies are in balance, and ensures all our biological systems function to the best of their ability, and has anti-inflammatory properties to maintain balance.

However, sometimes this balance gets thrown out, and that’s when disease and illness strike.

New research suggests that the endocannabinoid system plays a key role in maintaining this balance, mainly because it is involved in such a wide variety of bodily processes.

Hence, researchers and veterinary medicine suggest that, by stimulating the endocannabinoid system, cannabinoids like CBD can help more dogs promote homeostasis in the body, thus, a happy dog.

This is why many dog owners choose to use CBD products not only as a medicine to treat a specific illness but also as a regular supplement to promote the overall health and wellbeing of their pet.

CBD Reduces Anxiety and Stress

It’s important to note that CBD doesn’t just help deal with physical symptoms.

In fact, many studies have shown that CBD can help manage the symptoms of a variety of mental conditions, including anxiety.

Much like humans, pets can also suffer from anxiety, stress, or even specific phobias.

And while the exact source of anxiety may differ in pets, it can cause stress and specific physical reactions just like in humans.

Some common forms of anxiety affecting dogs include separation anxiety, noise anxiety, travel anxiety, and even specific phobias.

In humans, anxiety and stress might cause us to bite our nails, pace around, or become a little shaky.

In dogs, anxiety can cause similar repetitive behavior.

Some symptoms of anxiety in dogs and shelter dogs include:

  • Persistent barking
  • Chewing (furniture, shoes, rubbish, etc)
  • Urinating and defecating (usually inside the house or crate)
  • Aggression
  • Tremors

CBD has been shown to help reduce feelings of anxiety and thereby reduce these symptoms.

How it does so, however, isn’t completely clear.

Typical anxiety medications tend to target a type of serotonin receptor in the body known as 5-HT1A.

By targeting these receptors, anti-anxiety medications can help temporarily boost serotonin levels in the brain.

This can then lead to improvements in mood and help temporarily reduce feelings of anxiety or fear.

Research suggests that CBD might work in a similar way, also temporarily increasing serotonin levels in the brain.

In doing so, the compound can have anti-anxiety and anti-depressant effects, while also helping reduce stress.

How Can CBD Help My Rottweiler?

Compounds taken from cannabis and hemp plants can have a plethora of health benefits for humans and pets.

CBD, for example, can help ease pain, fight inflammation, calm anxiety and fear, and possibly even hinder the growth and spread of tumors.

CBD Oil for Rottweilers With Osteosarcoma and Cancer

Osteosarcoma is a type of bone cancer that tends to affect large, big-boned dog breeds like Rottweilers, Great Danes, and others.

It is the most common type of bone cancer affecting canines.

Unfortunately, osteosarcoma is extremely aggressive and tends to metastasize rapidly.

While there are some treatment options available, the long-term prognosis for dogs with osteosarcoma is poor.

The symptoms of this cancer can include joint pain, swelling, and lameness, all of which are common symptoms of other conditions, including dysplasias and arthritis for example.

Some dogs may also become anorexic as a result of this cancer or become tired and lethargic.

Others may suffer from a large growth and severe inflammation around the areas of the tumor.

Most of the time, however, the symptoms of osteosarcoma are subtle, making it a difficult cancer to diagnose.

If your dog suffers from osteosarcoma, we highly recommend using CBD for 2 main reasons:

The #1 reason: CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory, sometimes labeled one of the most potent natural anti-inflammatories known to date.

CBD can ease the inflammation caused by a wide variety of conditions, including everything from arthritis and Inflammatory Bowel Disease to Parkinson’s.

That’s because CBD activates the endocannabinoid system, a system that all mammals (including you and your dog) have.

This system plays a key role in a variety of bodily processes, including pain, memory, metabolism, mood, and, most importantly, inflammation.

By activating this system, CBD can possibly help fight inflammation around your dog’s tumor.

In doing so, CBD can help your dog experience less pain due to their condition.

Another way CBD can greatly help your Rottweiler with osteosarcoma is this:

There's a link between CBD and powerful anti-cancer properties.

A large body of recent research suggests that CBD and other compounds found in cannabis/hemp plants can help fight the growth and spread of tumors.

Studies show that it does so by a process known as angiogenesis.

In order to continue developing and growing, tumors develop new blood vessels via angiogenesis.

This process helps direct blood to the tumor, ultimately helping it stay alive and spread.

Studies have shown that CBD can directly inhibit a tumor’s ability to produce these new blood vessels, which ultimately causes it to die.

Hence, if your Rottweiler is dealing with osteosarcoma (or any other kind of cancer for that matter), give CBD a try.

CBD Oil for Dogs With Hip - Elbow Dysplasia's

As mentioned earlier, Rottweilers and other large dog breeds are known to deal with dysplasias of the hip and elbows.

These dysplasias are caused by malformations in the hip or elbow joint, causing the bones in the affected joints to rub against each other unnaturally.

This friction causes the joints to become inflamed and swollen.

Over time, the joints wear out much more than they would regularly, usually giving way to other joint problems (most commonly arthritis).

This leads to all kinds of problems.

The most common and obvious is inflammation of the joints, which leaves your pet dealing with constant pain.

But there are many other effects of hip dysplasia and arthritis that further impede on your dog’s life.

And as I’m sure you know, weight gain is a big problem for dogs, and actually ends up putting further unnecessary pressure on their joints.

Luckily, CBD can help your pup's joint pain.

CBD is a renowned painkiller. It works like any other pain medication but without the nasty side effects.

So, if you have a Rottweiler with dysplasia and/or arthritis, we highly recommend trying CBD products.
